The sediments that make up the "Grand Canyon Supergroup" were laid down over millions of years in an ancient sea beginning about 1.2 billion years ago. About 725 million years ago the supergroup was tilted 15° and block faulted which is why these layers are not horizontal like all the layers above. Composed of shales, limestones, and quartzites, these tilted layers have beautiful shades of red and orange, especially in early morning or late afternoon light. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
